WORLD WAR II - TANKS

THE D-DAY 60TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION

On June 6, 1944, at 12:18AM, the greatest invasion in the history of the world began. It was D-Day. Forty-five Allied Divisions with almost three million men and their heavy armor began landing on the Normandy beaches in France as the invasion of Europe took full effect. An intense bombardment from the air and sea came from Allied aircraft and warships. They pounded the German positions on the beaches for hours. Eventually, the Germans were flanked and reduced so that the follow-on waves of troops and supplies could begin landing. There were over 2,500 Allied soldiers, sailors and airmen killed on D-Day. A lot of hard fighting lay ahead, but the liberation of France had begun. Corgi salutes this momentous event with the D-Day 60th Anniversary Collection, World War II Tanks.

The 37th Tank Battalion had cartoons and names painted on the hull sides of most of their tanks.

"Thunderbolt" was Colonel Creighton Abrams' first Sherman. Abrams would go on to become U.S. Army Chief of Staff during the Vietnam War. The new M1 tank now in service is named after him. This Sherman carries the usual star insignia on the hull sides and turret roof, with blue drab serial numbers toward the rear of the hull sides. The rear deck carries a fluorescent air identification panel in electric yellow backed with white.
